Sister Alice was born in Brighton, Massachusetts, one of four children of parents Philip and Alice Marie (Fitzgerald) McCourt. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1960, taking the name Alice Philip. Sister Alice earned a bachelor's degree from Emmanuel College, where she studied history, economics and sociology, and earned a master's in educational counseling from Boston College.
