Sister Gertrude Therese Mahoney was born on July 23, 1930, in Somerville, Massachusetts, to Francis Mahoney and Eileen (O'Brien) Mahoney.
She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur on August 28, 1958, took her first vows on January 26, 1961, and final vows on July 30, 1966. Sister Gertrude graduated from Emmanuel College in 1952 with a BA in Business Administration and Biology. She took postgraduate courses in Business Education at Boston University. She then received an MBA from Boston College.
Sister Gertrude made use of her knowledge of business and finance as the Treasurer of Emmanuel College and of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Ipswich Province. She also served as a Management Consultant for the Oblates of the Virgin Mary. She was known for her business acumen. During a sabbatical in 1985, she took classes in Scripture and Theology at Santa Clara University in California.
Sister Gertrude was predeceased by her brother, Charles, of Falmouth, Mass. She is survived by Charles' children Katherine, Elizabeth, Joan, Charles, Richard, and their spouses and children.
She went home to her good God on June 2, 2023, at the age of 92. A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated for Sister Gertrude on Friday, June 9th, in Ipswich, Mass.
