Sister Maureen Casey

"I am profoundly touched by the kindness of our Good God and I encourage all of you to have a boundless confidence in the Good God and to seek the Good God in everything."

St. Julie Billiart

I was the oldest of seven children and loved being part of a large family. In high school I was taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame. It was an inner-city school and I was so impressed with the way the Sisters reached out to the poor after school and on weekends. They loved the poor.

In my junior year, on the first Fridays of the month, the Sisters would squeeze us into the convent chapel for a service. Sister Sue Murphy would talk out loud to Jesus. That had a transforming effect on me. I remember saying, “I want that.”

After I entered I was sent out to teach high school. I never thought I’d be entering to be a teacher so it was a shock trying to teach high school girls. I excelled in going on ski trips and other kinds of things, but I did try to teach religion for five years!

The ministry that has meant the most to me is retreat ministry and spiritual direction. Basically helping people notice how God is working and moving in their lives.

At this time of my 50th Jubilee (2019) I am grateful for being part of an international community of women who are so dedicated to proclaiming God’s goodness.
