Statement of Condolence on the Death of Pope Francis

(April 21, 2025) – The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur U.S. East-West Province join with people across the globe in mourning the death of Pope Francis. We give thanks for his extraordinary leadership over the past 12 years, marked by his unwavering emphasis on mercy, his call to care for creation, and his deep concern for both the life of the Church and the well-being of society.

Pope Francis lived a life of humble service, always seeking to center the Gospel in the realities of our world. He encouraged us to embrace compassion, care for the most vulnerable, and to pursue justice with courage and fidelity. His example invited all people to a deeper awareness of God's love, especially through solidarity with the poor and the marginalized.

His vision and ministry beautifully reflected and affirmed our charism as Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur – to make known the goodness of God. Whether calling attention to the cries of the Earth, lifting the voices of those often unheard, or challenging the Church to walk more closely with those on the margins, Pope Francis gave witness to a Gospel that is alive, inclusive and full of hope.

We give thanks for his life and legacy and hold him in prayer with deep affection and gratitude. May he rest in the peace of our loving God, whom he faithfully served.
