The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Celebrate the Election of Pope Leo XIV

(May 8, 2025) – The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur U.S. East-West Province join with the universal Church in joyful thanksgiving for the election of Pope Leo XIV. A native of Chicago and longtime missionary in Peru, Pope Leo XIV brings to his pontificate a heart formed by deep pastoral service, humility and love for those on the margins of society.

This historic moment, marking the first time a pope has been chosen from the United States, is a sign of the Church’s global unity and the Holy Spirit’s movement across cultures and continents. The Holy Father’s life of missionary discipleship reflects the Gospel values we hold dear, and we are encouraged by his commitment to walk with the poor and the suffering.

As Sisters whose mission is to make known God’s goodness through education, advocacy and service – especially among those most forgotten – we find great hope in Pope Leo XIV’s first address, “We must be a synodal church, one which goes forward and which always seeks peace, charity and to be close to those who suffer.” These words echo our founding charism and call us anew to build a Church rooted in listening, mercy and compassion.

We pledge our continued prayers for Pope Leo XIV as he embraces this sacred responsibility. May his leadership inspire peace and justice in our world, and may his witness draw all people closer to the heart of Christ.
