A Homecoming Worth Celebrating at Emmanuel
July 8, 2026
On May 9, 2026, Emmanuel College welcomed back one of its own in the most meaningful way possible. Sister Mary Johnson, SNDdeN, alumna, professor and visionary Congregational leader, delivered the commencement address and received an honorary degree before a crowd of graduating students on the cusp of their own remarkable journeys.
Sister Mary’s connection to Emmanuel runs deep. A proud member of the Class of 1979, she later returned to campus as a professor of sociology, dedicating many years to shaping young minds. Alongside her colleagues, she conducted groundbreaking academic research while inspiring hundreds of students to pursue intellectual excellence and embrace lives rooted in shared values.
In her remarks to graduates, Sister Mary said, “I invite you to discern how and where you will build bridges and how you will be a bridge to those around the corner and to those halfway around the world. Let respect for the dignity of the human person, care for creation, solidarity and the common good be key principles to guide you through life’s decisions.”
Emmanuel College captured the spirit of the moment perfectly, describing Sister Mary as “a beloved alumna and former faculty member whose life exemplifies the transformative power of an Emmanuel education and the enduring mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.”
For the Class of 2026, her presence was more than an honor — it was a joyful, living example of responding to the Gospel call.
