Sister Margaret Hoffman, SNDdeN (1927-2021) was a gifted artist, well-loved teacher, a woman of great empathy, a faithful friend and a champion for issues of peace and justice.

As a young Sister missioned to the College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur University-NDNU), she was charged with starting the art department and went on to chair it for 20 years. Sister Margaret thrived on sharing her love of art with students, and her artistic legacy can be seen to this day at NDNU, where she designed the campus bell tower and worked closely with the artist who created the stained-glass windows in Cunningham Chapel.

Later in life, Sister Margaret excelled as the communications director for the California Province, publishing a newsletter and expanding community awareness of justice and peace issues.

On any given day, you could find her teaching a class at NDNU, writing an E-Alert or calling President Obama about human trafficking, care of the earth or immigration. We are grateful for Sister Margaret’s lifelong work, and we are dedicated to continuing to advance education and justice and peace advocacy.
