Sister Authors Book on SNDdeN Vows
October 31, 2025
Sister Judith A. Merkle, SNDdeN of the Ohio Province, has recently released her eighth book. In The Vows of Religious Life in a Secular Society, she explores foundational aspects of consecrated life and delves deeply into the vows of Obedience, Poverty and Chastity as applied to the modern world.
“These are not my spiritual thoughts on the vows,” says Sister Judith. “Rather, I take the vows, and I put them in conversation with contemporary research. It’s an academic approach.”
Bloomsbury Publishing says the book “invites us to consider whether religious life, despite contemporary criticisms, can be seen as ‘touching wholeness’.” It is now available on Amazon.
Sister Judith recently retired as Professor of Religious Studies at Niagara University. She holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Theology from the University of St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto, Canada.
