Elizabeth McLaughlin (1937-2025)
Returned to God on August 10, 2025
Sister Elizabeth McLaughlin, SNDdeN was part of a loving family with two sisters and one brother. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1955, taking the name Sister Elizabeth Edward. She received her calling as a teenager. “I don’t remember what drew me in but I knew that is what I wanted,” she said. Elizabeth celebrated 70 years at her Jubilee in 2025.
She began her ministry in 1959 at St. Aedan’s in New Haven teaching fifth grade, a time of great learning and great joy in her work. A year later, she was missioned to teach older children. Elizabeth continued serving in education across the Northeast including assignments at Sacred Heart in Springfield, St. Ann’s in Cranston, St. Theresa’s in Providence and St. Thomas Aquinas in New Britain where she taught for a decade.
After leaving education, Elizabeth then served as formation director in West Haven and later as spiritual life director at the Archdiocesan Spiritual Life Center in Bloomfield. She joined the Connecticut Province Team from 1996 to 2002. Her later years included pastoral and spiritual ministries in Narragansett, Windsor, Cranston and within CT Province leadership.
Sister Elizabeth was especially grateful for living in community at du Lac and remained committed to prayerful service and a peaceful spirit. With a strong, unshakeable faith, she once said, “My hope is that we live in peace and are able to adapt to changes as they arise.”
