”I am profoundly touched by the kindness of our Good God, and I encourage all of you to have a boundless confidence in the Good God and to seek the Good God in everything.”
—St. Julie Billiart
The oldest of seven children, Sister Maureen Casey, SNDdeN saays that she loved being part of a large family. In high school, she was taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame, at an inner-city school. “I was so impressed with the way the Sisters reached out to the poor after school and on weekends,” she says. “They loved the poor.”
In her junior year, on the first Fridays of the month, the Sisters would squeeze the students into the convent chapel for a service. “Sister Sue Murphy would talk out loud to Jesus. That had a transforming effect on me. I remember saying, ‘I want that.’”
After she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, she was sent out to teach high school. I never thought I’d be entering to be a teacher, so it was a shock trying to teach high school girls,” she says. “I excelled in going on ski trips and other kinds of things, but I did try to teach religion for five years!”
“The ministry that has meant the most to me is retreat ministry and spiritual direction,” she says. “Basically helping people notice how God is working and moving in their lives.”
She said of her 50th Jubilee, in 2019, “I am grateful for being part of an international community of women who are so dedicated to proclaiming God’s goodness.”
She has been involved in the ministry of spiritual direction and retreat work at St. Stephen Priory in Dover, MA and more recently at Miramar Retreat Center in Duxbury, MA. She has been involved in the ministries of spiritual direction and retreat work for the past 35 years. Sister Maureen is also part of the coordinating staff of the Spiritual Direction Internship Initiative.
