Sister Regina Whalen, SNDdeN was born to Richard and Mary (Sheehan) Whalen in Dorchester, Massachusetts, one of five children. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1950, taking a name to honor her parents – Sister Mary Richard.

A lifelong learner, Sister Regina earned a bachelor’s degree in history and English from Emmanuel College and three master’s degrees: guidance and child psychology (Boston College), sacred science/theology (St. Bonaventure College) and spirituality (Weston Jesuit School of Theology). She found her vocation enriched by the spiritual traditions of her community and a deep appreciation for nature, music and creativity. She embraced the Notre Dame mission with zeal, channeling her gifts into a life of education, spiritual guidance and international mission.

A pivotal influence in Sister Regina’s ministry has been the philosophy of Maria Montessori, whose emphasis on the dignity and potential of every child resonated with Sister Regina’s own educational values. Her training in theology deepened her faith foundation and expanded her spiritual understanding and her experiences on the staff of the Maryknoll Cross-Cultural Program and her studies at the Jesuit Center for Religious Development further strengthened her formation in spirituality and global mission.

Sister Regina has shared her gifts generously over the years—offering retreats and spiritual direction in parishes and SNDdeN retirement homes. She is known for creating beautiful and welcoming environments and serving with compassion and courage alongside her sisters in Zimbabwe. A particular joy was witnessing the first-ever vocation in the Zimbabwe unit of the congregation—a sign of hope and continuity.

With grace, Sister Regina played a special role in helping establish a sense of hospitality and sacred space at Notre Dame Cristo Rey High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where students from underserved backgrounds are empowered through education. Whether in the classroom, in retreat ministry, or on mission, Sister Regina has remained faithful to her call: to “do justice, love goodness, and walk humbly with God.”

In 2025, celebrating 75 years of religious life, Sister Regina has a heart full of gratitude, wonder and joy. Reflecting on her Jubilee, she echoes the words of Mary’s Magnificat: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.” These words capture her deep awareness of how profoundly God’s love and blessings have shaped her life through family, faith, vocation, education, and enduring friendships.

Now residing at the Notre Dame Long-Term Care Community, Sister Regina finds continued grace in music, prayer and loving relationships. Her life is a vibrant testament to God’s ongoing work: ever receiving, ever sharing, always grateful.
