Remembering Sister Edith Murphy (1936-2023)

Sister Edith Murphy, SNDdeN was born in 1936 in Boston to James and Edith (Sutcliffe) Murphy. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1955 and graduated from Emmanuel College with a Bachelor of Arts in education. In her career as an educator, Sister Edith taught in several Notre Dame schools in the greater Boston and Worcester areas of Massachusetts, including St. Michael’s School in Hudson, St. Mary’s Elementary School in Lawrence, Cuvilly Arts and Montessori School in Ipswich, and Our Lady of the Angels School in Worcester. She also taught summer school with the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in Gadsden, Alabama, and did missionary work in Nigeria. She taught First Communion preparation for eight years in Hudson, Lawrence, and Worcester. She also worked in the provincial office in Ipswich. She later worked with the St. Julie Asian Center in Lowell, where she helped recent immigrants by teaching English and computer skills.

Sister Edith went home to her good God on November 28, 2023, at the age of 86, and after 68 years as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur.
