Remembering Sister Jean Sullivan, SNDdeN (1938 – 2024)

Sister Jean Sullivan, SNDdeN, graduated from Cardinal Cushing Central High School and entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1957. She earned her A.B. in Education/History from Emmanuel College and her Montessori Certification from Cornell University, New York. Sister was a teacher at Notre Dame affiliated schools from 1960 to 1974, including St. James School, Salem, Annunciation School, Danvers and St. Mark's School, Dorchester.

Jean taught first grade pupils for many years. Her work with migrant families during the summer months inspired her to train in the Montessori method of education as the most effective way to boost the self-esteem and self-confidence of migrant and other children of low-income families. With Sister Pat O’Malley, SNDdeN, she co-founded Julie’s Children’s House, which also offered a parenting program for mothers, and with Sister Louise Kearns, SNDdeN, she created what is now Julie’s Family Learning Program.

Sister Jean went home to her good God on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the age of 86.
