In Foster City, California, 175 years of faithful ministry and impact came together on a spectacular afternoon as Sisters, staff and friends met to celebrate a historic milestone together.

square logo calif 175It was in 1851 that two Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur were missioned from Oregon to the heart of the gold rush in northern California, where they were asked to establish a school for the families of settlers, prospectors and immigrants. From those faith-filled beginnings to today, God continues to weave a tapestry of love through education, service and community.

At the anniversary luncheon, guests were greeted with a display of historic artifacts Large group of Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur standing together at California 175th Anniversary Luncheonand information highlighting our decades of service across the state. Archivist Jennifer Bator and her team carefully researched the people, places and programs that formed the foundation of our California province, pulling unique items from the collection for our guests to enjoy. Many Sisters posed for photos next to a mannequin wearing a pre-Vatican II habit, fondly recalling their early days in the Congregation!

Several raffle items were also on display, ranging from original artwork to a weekend at the Carmel retreat center. Each guest received a complimentary raffle ticket, with winners announced at the end of the luncheon.

With hors d’oeuvres and beverages circulating in the reception area, Sisters greeted one another and the manythree women standing next to a pre-Vatican II nun habit displayed on a mannequin form, at California 175th Anniversary Luncheon guests as their voices joyfully blended into one happy harmony. Once the doors to the banquet room opened, Sister Kathryn Keenan, SNDdeN warmly welcomed everyone to the celebration. Sister Mary Johnson, SNDdeN, Congregational Leader, also spoke about the significance of the anniversary and honored the many Sisters whose lives and ministries have helped shape this history.

The large video screens lit up with a special compilation featuring Sisters, Associates and school staff who beautifully shared short reflections on the seven Hallmarks of a Notre Dame Learning Community. After a short devotion and reflection, the food was blessed, and lunch was served.

Student speakers from Notre Dame San Jose then joyfully described how the Hallmarks have impacted them in their teen years. Sister Kathryn provided closing remarks to send the guests on their way with the blessing of the Sisters.

We are grateful to each person who shared this day with us and to the sponsors who helped bring this phenomenal event to our community. We are blessed by the faith you put in our mission to make known the goodness of God. Sr Martin de Porres and Janice Cantu posing at one of many tables at California 175th Anniversary Luncheon
